Uncle Archie, everyone called you uncle to be resp Uncle Archie, everyone called you uncle to be respectful. Me included.

I feel so lucky to have shared a few moments with you and your family in this lifetime – what a gift.

The interview I conducted for Clint’s program at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. The wonderful memory of singing in your Perth choir alongside my sister and choir leader Ms Della Morrison for, arguably one of your best albums ever, Into the Bloodstream. Having you come into World Radio in Maylands that time, to be interviewed on my program Whadjuk Radio. You didn’t have a guitar but luckily I had mine with me, and when I lifted it out of the case you said ‘this is my guitar, I have the exact same Maton at home, same make and model, yeah’ then you strummed it warm and made melodic magic. I didn’t realise how special it was at the time to have you play live on my radio show directly across that desk. I was in my mid-twenties and in survival mode, new to anchoring a community radio program and diligently watching cues. When David Wirrpanda brought you across for his foundation dinner, I had the absolute honour of introducing you to the stage and this time I truly absorbed the honour. The dinner moment that struck me deepest was when, while everyone else mingled and drank their drinks, you grabbed a chair to sit and listen to Clint play. You asked about that hollowed-out guitar body and yarned about music, of course. That meant a lot to him.

Then there was the year you received the Australia Council’s ATSIAB Red Ochre award, and I was honoured to receive the Fellowship on the very same night. What a healing night that was and a wonderful dinner together afterwards with some amazing artists, artworkers and industry legends.

Precious memories.

Boorda, kongk, Gunditjmara (Kirrae Whurrong/Djab Wurrung), Bundjalung Senior Elder, songman and storyteller. Reunited with your soulmate and family now. May the love and healing continue. Thank you for your advocacy and all you so lovingly gave to every blackfulla across this nation and the world. You’re quite simply irreplaceable. RIP.

What an honour to be announced the 2022 recipient What an honour to be announced the 2022 recipient of the Deutsche Bank Fellowship for First Nations Film Creatives at the 69th Sydney Film Festival.

I am humbly grateful and look forward to the professional development and project success that this fellowship will support.

SFF board member and Blackfella Films co-director Darren Dale said: “The Fellowship is an important investment in developing and nurturing the talents of local creatives and enhancing global awareness of Australia’s vibrant Indigenous filmmaking talent.”

Glenn Morgan, Deutsche Bank Australia’s CEO, said “Congratulations to Kylie for winning the Fellowship for 2022. Watching Darlene use the 2021 Fellowship to get valuable director/producer attachment experience on the mini-series Savage River and start to plan a feature-film version of her short-film “Bluey” has been wonderful. We can’t wait to see Kylie further develop her remarkable artistic craft and continue to be a role model for First Nations Creatives.”

For those asking ‘do I feel comfortable accepting funding from Deutsche Bank’, here’s my response:

I am frequently uncomfortable accepting arts funding, as most of it is sourced from institutions and companies implicated in the destruction of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and the unsustainable exploitation of Country. Federal and state governments are just as culpable as the private sector. My acceptance of the Deutsche Bank Fellowship for First Nations Film Creatives is not an endorsement and should not diminish their responsibility to the environment – a responsibility we all share as human beings. I urge government, shareholders, corporations, and the public to support immediate reform in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage protection at the federal level, more detail about which can be found at https://culturalheritage.org.au

MC Duties! EAST PILBARA RECONCILIATION BALL 2022 MC Duties!

EAST PILBARA RECONCILIATION BALL 2022

I was raised in regional WA and always enjoy getting out of the city to connect to Country and mix with mob.

Saturday night was fun, educational, joyful and memorable. It’s refreshing to witness first hand a community’s celebration to recognise those who deeply contribute to reconciliation in their town, with genuine passion, truth and hope (for change).

Mr Tinker welcomed us to country and I was seated at the same table as Kimberley Girl (her words) Hon. Rosetta Sahanna, Member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia.

@martumiliartists Art Centre is a stunning space. I had the opportunity to meet local artists Corban and Robena to learn more about the centre and the beautiful artworks (pictured). Wish I could have bought a heap! Highly recommend you visit when next in Newman, WA.

Such a good vibe to see @themerindas perform live again too. How many artists are touring regional WA towns today? Massive props to these women. Their new original songs are deadly. (I still filmed my fave though!)

Thank you to the East Pilbara Shire and the people of Newman for inviting me to the homelands of the Nyiyaparli and Martu to MC your 5th Annual Reconciliation Ball, I had a ball.

End note: Mr Tinker says ‘It’s good to have you here. Yeah. We got a lot of Martu mob on Noongar Country… going to hospital’. I heard these words but understood the deeper meaning beyond words. He was asking and hoping that the ancestors of our country and the people of our country take care of his people away from home. So you mob, if you see any Martu people at hospital or on boodjar, say hello from Mr Tinker and the mob. #bekind

Repost from @maatakitj:

The music of Noongar Wonderland is now available online!

This new collection of Noongar-language technicolour dance tracks I created with ARIA award winning Australian music icon @apaulmac first premiered as part of Noongar Wonderland, the multisensory experience by Boomerang and Spear for Perth Festival 2022. These tracks didn’t begin in a studio though! Dreaming these songs into existence came easy because I feel more connected to Country than ever with my little family and singing for dance leaders @chubbaryan and @rubeunyorkshire . Additional backing vocals are Kyle J Morrison, @ebmcguire and Ian Wilkes, and percussion by @arunussionist
